The Spanish sports betting market is going through massive arrests due to match-fixing and multiple fraud cases. At the same time, the Philippine iGaming industry is definitely expecting big changes in the regulations that will completely transform the offshore gaming licensing policy. The Australian authority is also taking action against illegal offshore gambling businesses in the country. And UK High Court makes a point in the case with International Game Technology and UK National Lottery.
Match-fixing case in Spain: 17 people are arrested
At the end of July, the local media reported massive allegations related to the match-fixing. Eventually, it led to 17 people being arrested in cities like Melilla and Granada. According to the Spanish police, 11 people were detained in Melilla, and 6 – in Granada.
The case took a start at the beginning of the year when police got warned about the suspicious betting activities in these regions. As an outcome, in February, the official investigation was launched.
Talking about the football club that was involved in the fraud scheme, there are no official allegations against any particular club. However, after some of the police reports, there was a suggestion that the football club involved was Huracán Melilla which wasn’t distinguished by its performance.
As a result, Spanish police will continue the investigation of the football club’s activity including the seven matches.
Pagcor announces new regulatory actions for offshore gaming licensees
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) has now officially introduced a new regulatory update that aimed to change the licensees for the offshore gaming business in the market.
Last month, it became crystal clear that the Philippine authority has now focused on decreasing illegal activity in the country, especially offshore gambling. The new regulatory actions imply a probationary period for gambling service providers until September 17th. The new measures will allow Pagcor to inspect the operators and clear the illegal business out of the market.
Moreover, as part of the initiative against offshore gambling, Pagcor also collaborates with multiple authorities to prevent the escalation of illegal activity in the Philippines.
ACMA launches new actions against offshore gambling, too
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has become another regulatory establishment that took action against the offshore gambling business. Five more illegal websites were shut down by the authority. Currently, the general number of blocked illegal websites is over 803. The most recently blocked platforms were accused of breaking the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.
ACMA has been acting very resolutely when it comes to offshore gaming operating in the market. The authority insists on compliance with the strict requirements if operators want to avoid blocking.
UK High Court officially dismisses the IGT and UKGC case: details
Recently, the International Game Technology (IGT) leveled accusations against the UKGB connected to the UK National Lottery licensing. After some time, the High Court announced case dismission.
Talking briefly, the case involved two operators – Camelot and Allwyn, alongside the provider IGB. When the Commission licensed Allwyn in September 2022, Camelot decided to challenge the Commission by teaming up with the IGB. The thing is – Camelot has been a national lottery operator in the UK market for several years. While the decision of licensing Allwyn could really influence the business, Camelot accused the authorities of making a wrong decision.
Eventually, Camelot withdraw its appeals, but IGT, which was already involved to support the operator, decided to go on with the damages claims in Court.
It took several months for the High Court to make a final decision, which is now saying that IGT has no legal reasons to require the damages claimed against the UKGC.
At the same time, Gambling Commission is sure that the decision of licensing Allwyn was totally right and reasonable.
